Description

This book consists of twelve chapters including the following: the letters of John Ford's secretary Meta Sterne giving authentic information and commentary about what went on behind the scenes on location in Ireland; the memoirs of Maureen Coyne-Cashman one of the few surviving bit players concerning her experiences on set with Wayne, O'Hara, and Ford; the real-life incidents on which the ecumenical scenes are based; an examination of the initial rejected screenplay by Richard Llewellyn which contained much of the inspiration for the final cut of the movie; and, an analysis and description of "Only the Lonely" starring Maureen O'Hara which was intended as a sequel to "The Quiet Man". It also includes: a miscellany chapter concentrating on the many theatrical, dramatic, television and musical representations of "The Quiet Man" over the last fifty years; the identification of the last outstanding bit player with a speaking part and his film career; a summary and discussion of the conference New Perspectives on the Quiet Man held at NUIG in 2006; David McGeeene and the collection of Quiet Man memorabilia; "A Quiet Man" quiz as held at the "Quiet Man" movie fan club AGM (Could the answers to this be place on the Cork University Press website to encourage readers to access your catalog?); the opening of Pat Cohan's "Quiet Man Bar" which featured in the film as a real bar, September 17th 2008; and, photographic identification of all QM cast. The book will also contain dozens of previously unseen stills from the movie and many unseen photographs of locations and personalities.
