Sam Pendlebury's father is always angry. Physically, Sam is nothing like his father. Is he adopted? His mother says not. She says he's the image of his paternal grandfather but there are no photographs of the latter, because Sam's father burned them. Later Sam discovers that his grandfather was a convicted murderer who escaped custody and disappeared. In his aunt's attic Sam discovers a diary in which his grandfather professes his innocence. And there's a watch with a weird inscription and some newspaper cuttings. Sam shows the watch to his friend, Emily. They agree that the inscription suggests Sam's grandfather has gone back in time to prove his innocence and clear the family name, which is Pendleford, not Pendlebury. Can people go back in time? Sam and Emily visit Sam's next-door neighbour, a retired professor who has discovered a wormhole. The Professor shows Sam and Emily how to program the computer that links him with the past, but warns them that making changes to the past could have dire consequences. The next day there's a terrible argument between Sam's mother and father and Sam runs away to find his grandfather and help clear the family name. Will Emily come with him into the past? Initially Sam travels alone. At Circular Quay in 1983 he meets a young back packer called Vince. Only later does he realise that Vince has a strong motive for wanting to murder his grandfather's business partner. Emily arrives soon after and Sam introduces her to Wicker, a street urchin he's befriended. The three children take action that changes the course of history and Sam gets his grandfather back. But are there other consequences of changing the past? How will the changes they've made affect Sam's, Emily's and Wicker's futures?
