"Most Positivley The Best Book I Have Ever Read!"
5 stars"

If you love drama, you will LOVE this. The book gives you a history lesson, but also an insight into the lives of two woman with struggling lives, brought together in disaster! Although I normally stick to Vampire books, i could not put this one down. EVERYTHING about it was amazing. Although you couldn't imagine all those awful things happening it still does, yet u are still happy by the end. Still cannot believe how amazing this book is, and its been months. I have recommended it to all ages. The most meaningful book I have ever read.

Highly Recommended !!

Description

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan's last thirty years -- from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding -- that puts the violence, fear, hope and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two generations of characters brought jarringly together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives -- the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness -- are inextricable from the history playing out around them.

Propelled by the same storytelling instinct that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once a remarkable chronicle of three decades of Afghan history and a deeply moving account of family and friendship. It is a striking, heartwrenching novel of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love -- a stunning accomplishment.

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism.

`The novel offers extraordinarily harrowing insights into the lives of Afghan women over the past three decades …. If he cut his teeth by writing about his countrymen, it is the plight of Afghanistan's women that has brought him to realise his full powers as a novelist' (The Times)
