Author Biography:

Kären Wigen is a Frances and Charles Field professor of history and cartography at Stanford University. Her books include Cartographic Japan: A History in Maps (co-editor, University of Chicago Press, 2016), Seascapes: Maritime Histories, Littoral Cultures, and Transoceanic Exchanges (co-editor, University of Hawaii Press), and The Making of a Japanese Periphery, 1750-1920 (University of California Press, 1995).
