Description

This book examines real-time models and advanced online applications that enhance reliability and resilience of the grid in real-time and near real-time environments. It is written by Peak Reliability engineers who worked on the creation of the West Wide System Model (WSM) and the implementation of advanced real-time operation situational awareness tools for reliability coordination function. The book looks at how a single Reliability Coordinator for the Western Interconnection did its work under normal and emergency conditions, providing a unique perspective on best practices and lessons learned from Peak’s modeling and coordination efforts to create, maintain, and improve state-of-art new technology and algorithms to improve real-time operation situational awareness and Bulk Electric System (BES) grid resilience. Coverage includes practical experience of implementing real-time Energy Management System (EMS) Network Application, real-time voltage stability analysis, online transient stability analysis, synchrophasor technology, Dispatcher Training Simulator and EMS Cybersecurity & Inter-Control Center Communications Protocol (ICCP) implementation experience in a Reliability Coordinator Control Room setting.  Explains how to operate a “green” grid and prevent new blackouts against uncertain operation conditions; Written by Peak Reliability engineers who worked on the creation of the West Wide System Model (WWSM); All material verified in practical system operations, or validated by real system measures and system events.

Author Biography:

Hongming Zhang, PhD, Chief Energy Operation Modeling Engineer with National Renewable Energy Laboratory, focusing on the North America Energy Resilience Modeling project. Dr. Zhang was EMS Network Applications Manager with Peak Reliability (formerly WECC Reliability Coordinator), where he was responsible for EMS/DTS Applications, real-time voltage stability and transient stability analysis tools, and new synchrophasor technology development for control room solution. He chairs the WECC Joint Synchrophasor Information Subcommittee (JSIS) and plays a leadership role in the North America SynchroPhasor Initiative (NASPI) and NERC Synchronized Measurement Subcommittee (SMS) Working Group. Prior to his employment with WECC, Dr. Zhang worked in ERCOT and ABB Network Management Systems (ABB-NM). From 1993 to 1998, he was a faculty member with the Electrical Engineering Department, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, and BSEE and MSEE degrees from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.   Slaven Kincic, PhD, obtained his B.Eng. degree from FER (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing), Zagreb, Croatia, and his ME and PhD degrees from École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS), University of Quebec, Montreal, Canada, where he worked as a researcher and lecturer. He currently works for Peak Reliability as a senior Power System Engineer. His previous work experience includes BPA-consulting for wind desk development, WECC Reliability Coordination, during and after the startup of new RC (Reliability Coordination) center as a Modeling Engineer West-wide System Model building and EMS Analyst for Idaho Power Company. His main research interests are FACTS, Renewables, Power Electronics, Power Systems, Power System Modeling, Magnetics and State Estimation. Sherrill J.H. Edwards is a DTS Engineer with Peak Reliability, Vancouver, WA. He uses the Dispatcher Training System (DTS) for simulating real world events and training scenarios for Reliability Coordinator. Prior to Peak, he worked in the electrical utilities area with Nevada Power and Alstom Grid. He received a Bachelor degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, and an MS degree in electrical engineering from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces. He is currently certified as a NERC Certified System Operator-Reliability.
