Description

Albert is an aging veteran of the Civil War who lives in a small rural town in Illinois. One day, while working for a local politician, Albert is accidentally injured. Once medical assistance is called for Albert is treated for her injuries. During that treatment an amazing discovery is made-Albert is a woman! This discovery leads to revelations that stun not only the few people who hear them but Albert herself. In the end questions arise about what to do next with Albert. Should her lifelong secret be kept or should the old soldier be shown for who she really is? But whatever happens, people are left wondering why did Albert do this & how was she never discovered earlier? Albert & Jennie tells the story of a singular Civil War soldier. Albert Cashier served with the 95th Illinois Volunteer Infantry for four years. What her comrades in arms did not realize was that Albert Cashier was really Jennie Hodgers, an Irish immigrant girl. In this novel the story of Albert Cashier's wartime experiences are told through a combination of fictional constructs and historical fact.Particular attention is paid to details of a Civil War soldier's existence as well as the narrative chain of Albert's life. Albert & Jennie is a work of historical fiction that also touches on themes related to friendship, loss, isolation, loneliness, and love.
