Bill Willingham's writing has really improved with this arc. Things start off and end very strongly. And also things here set up the pace and tone for future stories.
There are many amazing plot twists in this arc. Spike has a soul crisis. Connor tries hard not to mix business with pleasure. Friends and team mates killed. Eddie Hope is possibly becoming the target of his own game. The revelation of one member of Team Angel has the most impact of all, even moreso than the reveal of Twilight in Buffy Season 8. One who claimed to be divine is NOT actually who he says he is. And what is his big masterplan?
Words cannot describe how beautiful the closer is. #38 is without a doubt one of the most emotive Angel stories to come from IDW. Angel's internal reflective dialogue at the start of #38 and his final scene with Connor are real moving.
Theres alot of breathing room between stories, there have been some stories happen off panel or in mini-series. NOTE: The Spike: The Devil You Know mini-series takes place before #33. A week or two has gone by since Angel was incarcerated in the last arc up to #33. Also the Eddie Hope backups most likely take place between #33 and #34 as Laura Kay Weathermill is still healing up from her broken leg.
