The temporary removal of the latter to Paris tended greatly to complicate matters, while the introduction into the as sociate staff of a number of foreign authors added at least one month's work in translation, revision, etc., to the usual quantum. To the promptness of the majority of the associates was added the usual willingness of the editor's immediate assistants to do all in their power to diminish the arduousness of his yearly task; and these elements, supplemented by the efforts of the publishers to execute as rapidly as practicable the mechanical portion of the work, made it possible to issue it at the usual time.
