This is the first English guidebook specifically on the archaeological sites and monuments of southern Albania. Designed to guide visitors around the sites of this archaeologically rich and varied region, the book also provides a comprehensive overview of the latest archaeological results from the area. The guide includes detailed illustrations and plans of the archaeological remains, which span from prehistoric settlement sites, Hellenistic sanctuaries and Roman urban buildings, to Byzantine ecclesiastic architecture, medieval fortifications and Ottoman castles.

Author Biography

Oliver J Gilkes (University of East Anglia) has excavated extensively in Britain, Italy and Albania, concurrent with research in the complex excavation histories of Albania, and Butrint in particularly, as well as the intricate interplay between archaeology and dictatorship in inter- and post-War Europe. He is the author of numerous articles on both archaeology and historiography, and the editor of The Theatre at Butrint (2003) published by the British School at Athens.
