Since the turn of the century, the Carmen II coastal fishing boats which plied the Cantabrian Sea have been subjected to constant change.
Their design was influenced by the changing needs of net fishing, as well as by innovations in safety regulations. The boat's different colors signify their geographic origins. Paint serves to protect the wood, but the choice of color combinations has become a ritual in the whole northern region.
