This new NZ novel is outstanding. Told from various characters' points of view in the present and past, it is largely about family dislocation, aroha and tragedy. There is extreme domestic violence but only as a reflection of society and the wider effects. The characters are achingly beautiful and credible. I couldn't put this book down, then when I finished I skim read it again to check I hadn't missed something. The ending is satisfying without spelling out all the answers. I would boldly say this is the best NZ novel ever.
