Description

For every moment in history, there are countless stories of how people were affected by it. Such a moment of power comes when a restless boy and his tired mother are at the back of a Montgomery bus, unknowing witnesses to one of the primary sparks of the Civil Rights movement. The boy can't see everything through all the grownup legs in his way. But he does see all the dirty looks people are throwing like stones at the back of the bus. And he does see the policeman arrive. And he does see Mrs. Rosa Parks being led off the bus in handcuffs. And he sees the storm in his mama's eyes and the way her chin juts out, strong. And he loosens his tight grip on his marble and lets it sit free in his hands, not wanting to hide it from anyone. A Black History Month selection, yes but something more, as well. A story for children, not just teachers. It's December 1, 1955. A boy and his mother are riding the bus in Montgomery, Alabama like any other day-way in the back of the bus. The boy passes time by watching his marble roll up and down the aisle with the motion of the bus... Until a big commotion breaks out from way up front. With simple words and powerful illustrations, Aaron Reynolds and Coretta Scott King medalist Floyd Cooper recount the pivotal arrest of Rosa Parks at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement.
