The names of the several composers will, for the most part, be a sufficient guaranty for the general excellence of the pieces. The aim, in the preparation of the book, has been to procure music which should combine, as far as possible, the characteristics of appropriateness, sweetness and melody and animation of expression, and originality. And as most of the tunes will be found adapted for use on ordinary occasions, in the singing of hymns requiring the same general musical expression, it is believed their introduction into choirs and churches cannot fail to add very perceptibly to the interest and profit of the ordinary exercises of public and social worship. The writer indulges the persuasion that not a few whose hearts may be touched in the use of the sweet strains of music which are here supplied, will unite with him in sincere and grateful acknowledgements to the gentlemen whose names stand at the head of the several pieces, for the generosity and favor which they have shown in enabling him to realize so fully the conception in which the volume originated.
