This book always sits near the top of the pile of books that people love, when it comes to Batman, but it's not often that I see it's someones favourite, usually that is reserved for Year One, or The Dark Knight Returns. While those are certainly great books, I find they don't hold up, or excite in the ways they may have in a pre-Nolan Batman world (or even a pre-Burton Batman world).
While, this isn't the best Batman/Bruce Wayne in the comics, that I've read, the overall book lifts it above the rest for me. The working relationship between Batman, Dent & Gordon is as exciting as ever, and it's fun to see a story so focused on the mob, while also littering the book with the famous villains everyone loves.
As a fan of Two-Face, I was super pumped to read this, to see such an fantastic book detail his origin. Seeing certain qualities in a pre-Two-Face Harvey Dent, is fascinating, and helps illustrate why he was just destroyed in this book. As made clear on the front & inside of the book, Christopher Nolan definitely is a huge fan of this book, because there's a lot of similarities between this & his film series, particularly The Dark Knight.
While the mystery of who the Holiday killer was & why he was killing all the people he was, was engaging, it wasn't what sold me so strongly on the book. One thing I'll definitely complain about is that this mystery is definitely not resolved brilliantly, it was handled adequately, but most of that is undone in the final few pages of the book, which really turns it into a bit of a dumb ending, quite frankly. In spite of that, there's too many working parts in the book, particularly the ending, that refuses this to be something that falls to pieces in the end.
