Description

Bedford is a name from British automotive history that became synonymous with quality commercial vehicles. Between 1930 and the late 1980s few companies, large or small, did have at least a couple of Bedfords within their fleet. These were dependable vehicles used by fleet operators all over the UK and beyond. When the new lesiure activity of motorcaravanning became popular in the mid-1950's, it was hardly surprising that converters turned their attention to the Bedford CA light commercial van, which had been unveiled in 1951. The CA and CF ranges were the perfect size for compact camper vans that could nevertheless provide a good level of comfort and luxury. Add in the smaller HA and the later Midi and Rascal models, and Bedford offered a host of attractive options. Here Martin Watts, founder of the Classic Camper Club, tells the complete story of all the Bedford camper and motorhome vehicles. AUTHOR Martin Watts has had a lifelong affair with period and classic campervans. In 1991 he was the founder member of the Classic Camper Club, an organization set up to assist owners and enthusiasts of campers from a bygone era. Since then Martin has established himself as an expert in the field of older motorcaravans. He writes a regular monthly column for Motorcaravan & Motorhome Monthly (MMM) and has contributed to a variety of other magazines and newspapers. Martin has owned a variety of period campers over the years and currently uses a 1974 ERF Roadranger based on the Mk1 Ford Transit. ILLUSTRATIONS 200 colour photos
