Description

Ingmar Bergman, by now responsible for about 100 stage performances, a fair number of radio productions, some fifty feature films and around a dozen TV productions, has for more than 50 years combined an impressive versatility with a highly recognisable individual signature. This book attempts to compare Bergman's stage and screen activities. The author tackles this subject by examining formal and thematic correspondences and differences between a number of Bergman's stage, screen and radio productions. The book's prologue outlines Bergman's spritual and aesthetic heritage and his position in the 20th-century media landscape, while the epilogue analyses the extent to which Bergman may be said to have a directorial "method" irrespective of the chosen medium.
