In September of 2016 I set out to photograph every bridge that crosses the James River in Virginia, USA. Without much thought as to why this was important, I decided to make it my goal. I had time, a car, a kayak, and a camera, and so I started. This is my journey. Bridgetaking and Other Adventures is a photographic journey from west to east of every bridge that crosses the James River. After visiting each bridge in person and photographing it from many angles, I researched every bridge to understand both its history and its present importance. Although not a history book, Virginia's past is presented in these bridges that have been built, destroyed, flooded, rebuilt, and changed. The first permanent English settlement at Jamestown was established on the banks of the James River in 1607; much of American history depended upon the James River and its bridges. Today, these bridges provide transportation in and around Virginia's small towns and big cities, and allow major highways to cross the state. A bridge is an engineering feat that most of us take for granted. Bridgetaking and Other Adventures will challenge you to be more aware and appreciative of the history and engineering of the bridges around you. It will encourage you to go out and explore your own community and state, perhaps in a different way. It is my wish that you might decide to take a little trek to a remote area of Virginia to have your own adventure!
