L. Staunton, Mr. T. Taylor, General Melville, Bishop of London In i77s; he was appointed adjutant-generalto the Bri riih forces, under the command of Sir Henry Clinton, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel in The army. In this capacity he fhewed himfelf net only brave, but aetive and judicious; and rendered effential fervice in the hazardous retreat of the Britifh army through the Jerfeys, from Philadelphia to New York, and alfo in the action at Mon mouth. He after/wards embarked with the troops for Charlc own, and ferved at the liege of that place, where he acquitted himfelf with fuch fingular judgment and dif tinguifhed valour, that, notwithflanding his want of years, and confequently prefumed inexperience, he was appointed to the command of a feparate corps ln the province of South Carolina. In a {hort time after, he joined the army under Lord Cornwallis, \iand at the battle of Camden had the command of one of the divifions, with which he com menced the action, and which proved one of the molt brilliant and decifive in favour of the Britifh arms.
