Description

Excerpt from Canterbury Pilgrims and Their Ways, Vol. 1 Archbishop of Canterbury, who made him his intimate friend and trusted confidant. He accompanied his patron to Rome, but withdrew for a year to study canon law at Bologna and Auxerre. Though as yet only in minor orders he had many preferments. In 1154 he was made Archdeacon of Canterbury, an im portant and lucrative office. In 1155 Henry II ap pointed him Chancellor of England. The bright, gay, learned, clever, politic man of affairs fascinated the King as he had fascinated the Archbishop. They were hand and glove together, hunted, sported, feasted, joked in company. One famous story is how in riding through the streets of London the King roughly tore off Thomas's cloak to throw to a beggar.
