"To sum up . . . . AMAZING"
5 stars"

I started watching castle during season 2 and was hooked straight away. The cases are interesting and less predictable than you may first think. My favorite thing about castle though would have to be the banter between Beckett and Castle. Those two have the best on screen chemistry that I have seen in a tv series in a long time. It is surprisingly funny and heartwarming and is a must watch. I have since brought Castle season 1 on DVD and am loving it. I would definitely recommend Castle to anyone who is a fan of programs such a CSI or law and order. Except this is SO much better. You really get to know the characters and they are all extremely likable.

"Better than TV One makes it look"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I resisted watching Castle on TV because the ads make it look like CSI Miami with extra smarm, crude, witless and in very poor taste. Only I kept hearing good things about it. And caved.

My verdict? The initial premise–writer's-block-stricken novelist scores role as unpaid “consultant” to busy city homicide detective in order to use her for his muse–strikes me as preposterous and absolutely replete with potentially embarrassing and expensive legal fallout were it ever attempted in real life. But the quality of the writing and acting is perfectly sufficient to get me to suspend my disbelief while watching. The leads have some chemistry, but more important than that is the fact that they have reasonably well-rounded characters to play. Actually, even the minor recurring characters in this show, like the junior detectives whose names I've never bothered to memorise, have been constructed with thought and care.

The banter between Castle and Beckett is a highlight of the show. TV One's ads for the show, which are full of mostly awful one-liners, really don't represent this aspect well. There's a lot of sustained verbal wordplay, more than you usually find in an American show. In places it comes so thick and fast that you'll probably be glad you have the DVDs so you can go back and listen again.

The actress playing Castle's mother is somewhat over the top–frankly, her lines would be funnier if they came from someone less obviously overbearing–but the girl playing his daughter is a real gem. Watch for little touches like when she reads aloud from his computer screen–she NEVER sounds like she's reading rehearsed lines, and she has an amazing ability to play the character as very young (which she is) when required and as very mature, which is her character's basic personality. The family dynamic here is enough for an entire show on its own, and the juxtaposition of weird family life with weird crimes really works well.

I found the special features on this set completely underwhelming and didn't get through any of the commentaries or outtakes. At $55, this set is a little steep considering it's not even a dozen episodes across three discs. But if you see it on sale? Jump at it. I hope subsequent seasons will be out in region 4 soon.

Description

Get on the beat with a new hit drama. Loaded with provocative banter and a talented cast “too appealing to resist.” Says Glenn Garvin of the Miami Herald, Castle: The Complete First Season is can't-miss entertainment.

Rick Castle is a world-famous crime novelist whose stories come to life when a copycat killer follows his literary blueprint. Enlisted to help the NYPD stay a step ahead of the murderer, Castle realises working with the police can also supply him with a slew of ideas for his next book. The relationship gets a little more complicated – and a whole lot more fun – when he is paired with the attractive Detective Beckett, who doesn't appreciate Castle's unorthodox style.
