In 1917, David Lloyd George declared that airmen were 'the cavalry of the clouds ...the knighthood of this war ...' John Sweetman read Modern History at Brasenose College, Oxford, and went on to complete a PhD on the Crimean War at Kings College, London. He is Hon. Research Fellow at Keele University and former Head of Defence and International Affairs at Sandhurst. He lives in Camberley, Surrey.
