Description

21st Century "blended family" dynamics clash with Old World traditions. Irish Catholic Thomas and bohemian Paula from Colorado fall in love on Ireland's Puffin Island in the summer of 1968. Four decades later, they strive to rekindle their romance and create the family lost to them when they parted in the Sixties. Thomas is determined to produced the ideal blended family. He insists the Koyles join the O'Connells for Christmas in Dublin, 2008. When his five adult offspring encounter Paula's two, tempers flare, claws protract, sparks fly and new alliances are born as the children jockey for position in the new family order. Until his son and Paula's daughter stand together against him, Thomas is blind to their growing intimacy as they are thrown together during the emotionally charged holiday festivities at Copley Castle and his club's Ball. Their relationship inserts a unique twist to the definition of "blended family." "Celtic Compass, Part I" explores the dynamics of the blended family in the 21st century with all the emotion, conflict, compromise and sacrifice it wreaks on its members. Thomas is forced to question his values and religious teachings while trying to salvage his relationship with Paula. She, in turn, wonders if children are doomed to relive the trials of their parents' pasts.

Author Biography:

AWARD WINNING AUTHOR SHERRY SCHUBERT, named 2012 Writer of the Year by Idaho Writer's League and a recipient of an Editors' Choice award from Idaho Author Awards, is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Class of 1967. Subsequently, she spent two years hitchhiking abroad, gathering grist for stories and a packful of dreams. "Life" called her back to her home state of Idaho where she raised a family and taught teenagers to solve quadratic equations. Ms. Schubert's yen to write fiction during retirement is precipitated by her daughter's observation, "I have no idea who you were before you were Mom." The author specializes in fiction appealing to Baby Boomers and their children. "Puffin Island" relates how the historical events and social issues of the Sixties shaped the author and still reverberate in her children's lives today. "Celtic Compass, Part 1," applies her experience in a Sixties "blended family"-before that term was coined-to present-day holiday conflicts. "Celtic Compass, Part II," explores the challenge of divided loyalties faced by members of a blended family in a time of crisis "Celtic Circle for Better, for Worse" examines how antagonistic members of a blended family channel their bitterness and grief. In "Celtic Circle Forever," hostile members of a blended family seek pathways to reconciliation following tragedy. In addition to her five novels, Ms. Schubert is a contributing author to the short story anthologies," Hauntings from the Snake River Plain" and "Family Recipes from the Snake River Plain." Sherry continues to live and write on the family farm. For the record, she did shake the hand of President Kennedy, and she did play the guitar... badly.
