Champions of Norrath is an excellent action role-playing game very much in
the style of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.
In the beginning your character, created from one of several classes, is sent
into Feydark Forest to provide assistance to the native elves in their battle
with the invading orcs. This, of course, naturally progresses to you saving the
EverQuest world from the evil powers that be. The five acts of the game take you
through Feydark Forest, into the Underworld (realm of the gnomes), to a desert
island and more.
There's huge amounts of items up for grabs for people who have the patience
to find a shop and sell their items (“I can't carry any more!”) before
returning to certain scenes and grabbing the remainder of the loot.
Combat is fairly basic for the most part and although there's plenty of it,
it rarely becomes tedious. The levelling system allows you to increase your
strength, dexterity, intelligence and vitality levels as well as allocating
points to certain special skills such as two-handed weapons or evasion.
Challenging at times but rarely frustrating, Norrath deserves a place in any
PlayStation 2 owner's RPG collection.
