Von Ryan's Express

As the Allies begin to push the Nazis back toward Germany, U.S. combat pilot Col. Joseph Ryan (Sinatra) is shot down and placed in a prison camp. Initially, he's more concerned with surviving than escaping, earning him the insulting nickname, "Von Ryan". But in time, Ryan takes over from the commanding British officer (Trevor Howard) and masterminds a daredevil race for freedom that involves commandeering a train and getting it across Italy to Switzerland with the Nazis in hot pursuit.

Young Lions, The

MARLON BRANDO In A Controversial Role

Academy Award winner MARLON BRANDO captures the extraordinary contradictions and complexity of a decent man who winds up as a Nazi officer. THE YOUNG LIONS tells the story of World War II from both sides. The American, represented by MONTGOMERY CLIFT and DEAN MARTIN. And the German, made tragically vivid by BRANDO. Based on the novel by Irwin Shaw. THE YOUNG LIONS is a provocative, insightful movie. It is also one of Brando's all-time best.

Desert Fox, The

James Mason delivers a strong performance in the title role of this sympathetic study of Field Erwin Rommel. In the early 40's, Rommel's juggernaut Arfika Korps dominated North Africa. But as the tide turned and he came to the painful realisation that his Fuhrer, to whom he has sworn allegiance, was destroying Germany, his ingrained sense of duty pushed him into a conspiracy against Hitler. Focusing on the later part of Rommel's career, the film portrays him as a dedicated soldier, sympathetic to his men and devoted to the art of waging war in a dignified, disciplined manner. Co-starring Jessica Tandy as Rommel's wife and Cedric Hardwicke as another anti-Hitler conspirator, THE DESERT FOX is an intimate look at one of the most respected military tacticians of modern times, openly admired by both those who followed him into combat and those who faced him on the field of battle.

Hunters, The

With its electrifying flight sequences and high-powered cast, THE HUNTERS is a mesmerising film based on the best-selling novel by veteran fighter pilot James Salter. Set during the height of the Korean War, the story centres on Major Cleve Saville (Robert Mitchum), a master of the newly operational F-86 Sabre fighter jets. But adept as he is at flying, Saville's personal life takes a nosedive when he falls in live with his wingman's (Lee Philips ) beautiful wife (May Britt). To make matters worse, Saville must cope with a loud-mouthed rookie (Robert Wagner) in a daring rescue mission that threatens all their lives in this well-crafted war drama.

Sand Pebbles, The

The Sand Peebles tells many stories. It's the story of China, a slumbering giant that rouses itself to the cries of its people - and of hte Americans who are caught in its bloddy awakening. It's the story of French (Richard Attenborough), a crewman on the USS San Pablo who kidnaps his Chinese bride from the auction block. Most of all, it's the story of Jake Homan (Steve McQueen), a sailor who has given up trying to make peace with anything - including himself. Nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for McQueen, The Sand Peebles blends explosive action with stirring drama and romance.
