Excerpt from Cleveland Illustrated: A Pictorial Hand-Book of the Forest City, Comprising Its Architecture, Manufactures and Trade; Its Social Literary, Scientific and Charitable Institutions; Its Churches, Schools and Colleges During the next three years considerable progress was made by the new settlement. The population, which at the beginning of 1798 numbered fifteen, was increased in 1799 by the arrival Of the families of Rodolphus Edwards and Nathaniel Doane, the latter numbering nine persons. These new arrivals were ninety-two days on their way from Connecticut. In 1800 several other families came; houses were put up in different parts Of the plateau upon which the city east Of the river now stands, a township school was organized and the children taught by Sarah Doane. That year was also noticeable for the first sermon, which was preached by the Rev. Joseph Badger, sent out by the Connecticut Missionary Society.
