Controfase (LP)
The one downside of Ennio Morricone’s prolific catalogue of soundtracks
for film and
television (such as The Untouchables, Django and literally hundreds more), is
that his
more avant-garde works for production music libraries are often overlooked.
Controfase is one of those lesser known opuses. First released with a run of
just 500
copies, the record is symbolic of Morricone’s handle on gloomy,
contemporary
classical composition. Discordant jazz motifs, rich ambient textures and
amorphous
string sections all haze into one effective and cinematic whole. Its an
unmistakably
Morricone piece of work but the twilight zone inhabited on Controfase is
worth
exploring.
