The group cite late ‘60s pop, The Buzzcocks, The Ramones, post-punk and new wave as influences and bring to mind another Sheffield band, Pulp, whose bassist Steve Mackey produced the Blondes’ debut Someone To Drive Me Home.
Couples is the bands 2nd album on Rough Trade, and is produced by one of the most revered and respected DJs worldwide, Erol Alkan (who has dropped stadium-sized remixes of Hot Chip, Daft Punk and The Klaxons, among others).
Musically, Couples sees The Long Blondes stepping, dancing, falling and laughing into brave new worlds: fusing the lyrical collages of Bryan Ferry and the musical cut-and-paste of St Etienne; exploring glacial minimalism and unsettling Krautrock rhythms; and evoking the atmospheres of the likes of Stereolab or even The Pet Shop Boys.
In a nation of identikits, Couples could not have been written by any other group. The Long Blondes are moving, effortlessly and upwards, to those giddy stratospheres that are rightfully theirs.
