Description

This volume investigates the controversy between Poststructuralism and Critical Theory. Contemporary discussions frequently present a polarized picture of the argument between the two critical factions whereby Poststructuralism is regarded as lacking the foundations essential for political critique. The author questions the accuracy of this picture and her book shifts the emphasis from struggle to dialogue between the two theories. He demonstrates a new possibility for exchange between Poststructuralism and Critical Theory, regarding the question of critique and violence as the major meeting points between the two traditions. The book positions itself "between" the two in an effort to widen the spectrum of critical debate and investigate what Critical Theory and Poststructuralism offer each other.

Author Biography:

Beatrice Hanssen was trained in Comparative Literature at Johns Hopkins University and is Associat Professor of German at Harvard University. She is the author of Walter Benhamin's Other History: Of Stones, Animals, Human Beings, and Angels (1998) and an editor of The Turn to Ethics (Routledge, 2000).
