When Fiona, a young Scottish woman from a small coastal town, goes to college in Nottingham, little does she dream that she will one day live in a place much further from home than this. By chance she meets a black African man in a rainy street and over the next few months they gradually fall in love. It's 1960 and Fiona finds little support from her family, especially from her mother. Nevertheless she marries WiI and they go to live in his home town in Sierra Leone.
