Description

The Curtiss P40 series of fighters – the Tomahawk and Kittyhawk (or Warhawk as it was known in the USA) are the subject of this film from Jeff Watson. “Damned by words but flown to glory” was the description given by one American General to the P40. Although it was obsolete at the beginning of World War II and outclassed by British, German and Japanese fighters, it did the job asked of it. The Kittyhawk was heavy and relatively slow but it was a stable gun platform and excellent in the ground attack role. Small wonder that it inspired tremendous loyalty in the pilots who flew it. This film shows the restoration of Australia’s only flyable P40 which at the end of the war was buried in a hole in the ground in Alberta, Canada! Also included is archive footage of Kittyhawks in North Africa, the Dutch East Indies and with the Flying Tigers in Burma.
