Description

D-Day, the largest amphibious invasion in history, took place on 6 June 1944. The subsequent battle of Normandy involved over a million men, and helped seal the fate of The Third Reich. This is a graphic account of the planning and execution of Operation Overlord, as well as the campaign which effectively destroyed the German forces in France, opening the way for the Allied advance. Including a wealth of superb photographs and maps, the book also contains 30 facsimile items of rare memorabilia, including diaries, letters and memos, bringing this 'Day of Days' dramatically to life.

Author Biography:

Professor Richard Holmes was one of the UK's leading military historians. As well as being the General Editor of the Oxford Companion to Military History, he presented several documentary series for the BBC. His books included The Napoleonic Wars Experience, as well as Tommy: The British Solider on the Western Front, Wellington: The Iron Duke and Red Coat. He died in 2011. IWM (Imperial War Museums) is a leading authority on conflict and its impact, from the First World War to the present. A family of five museums, IWM illustrates and records all aspects of modern war and of the individual's experience of it, whether allied or enemy, service or civilian, military or political, social or cultural.
