Description

Excerpt from Descendants of Cornet Joseph Parsons, Vol. 2: Springfield, 1636 Northampton, 1655 In 1912-13 the book entitled, Parsons' Family, Descendants of Cornet Joseph Parsons, was published. There was no thought, at that time, of continuing the work in a second volume. Soon after the delivery of this book, however, many letters were received asking for further information and expressing regret that certain lines of descent had not been completed. With these letters came suggestions as to data etc. That with proper research and arrangement would provide material for a second volume the purpose of which would be to bring many more lines to the present generation. The present volume is' the result of research and correspond ence continued since 1914. It represents years of close study to verify and arrange a very large amount of material. This has been a serious task, and yet a pleasure and a privilege; for whether as a member of a family, one prepares, or later reads such records, one cannot but realize an honest satisfaction in knowing the line from which one springs, and the lives and deeds of those united to one by ties of blood and family. Early in 1917 the material collected would have made a book of about 400 pages. Steps were taken at that time to publish the volume as it then appeared, but this project, with so many others of that year, had to be set aside because of the war with Germany. The years since 1914 have been of tragic importance in the world's history. Many of the present generation served their country and the world in the cause of truth, righteousness, and humanity, and many gave the last full measure of devotion. An effort was made to secure records of such service to add to the historic value of this book. In the meantime the volume grew since 1917 to its present size of over 700 pages. In arranging the material of this volume some perplexing problems had to be met in the effort to make it independent of, although virtually a continuation of, and supplementary to the first. Some historical matter could not be repeated, and bio graphical sketches of early ancestors could be retold only in condensed form. Sincere thanks are due to those who have aided in gathering and arranging data of their particular lines.
