Many people have written this game off due to the biased reviews from critics.
Right from the outset, they bashed Itagaki and his new game in the previews which lead to other previewers agreeing with their sentiments.
The odd thing in all of this drama was that when the game was released in Japan and then Europe that the player reviews were the complete opposite. People who purchased the game really enjoyed it.
I was hesitant at first to get this game but after a fair amount of consideration, I decided to buy it and see if the players were right.
In short, they were right, the game is very very FUN, which is something the critics cannot seem to grasp as they think everything should be gritty and serious.
The good
The mixture of melee and gunplay works quite well especially in multiplayer.
The framerate never became a hindrance in both single player or multiplayer. Sure it stutters occasionally but nothing that stops you from completing an objective.
Multiplayer is insanely fun and has many different modes which have amazing maps and are insane to play when there are 16 players on the same map. It never gets boring, and there is a ton of stuff to unlock. In fact the multiplayer component is like a game in itself and is right up there with Splatoon for how fun and engaging it is. The wall running aspect really makes for a very unique and hectic experience too.
The single player is like a B movie, its very silly but very funny and the gameplay reminds me of some 1990's game where you go into an area and clear out the enemies, mindless fun!
The bad
The controls take some getting used to but this doesnt make too much of a difference as everyone else that is playing in multiplayer has to adjust as well.
In single player there are insane difficulty spikes, bosses have one hit kills which they use randomly and some areas seem over crowded with enemies so it takes some time to complete some sections of the game.
The ugly
The graphics are all over the place, it doesnt bother me so much as I love playing games from older generations and am still playing the ported Gauntlet Legends from the N64 to the Dreamcast, but for some this may be a turn off.
The weird
The bosses are very very strange, its almost like they were pulled from entirely different games but having said that, they are all enjoyable to fight and memorable.
Final verdict
I would give this game a 7.5/10…its not the best game in the world and there are some issues with graphics and adjusting to the controls but overall I am very satisfied with it.
If you have some spare cash lying around and want to return to a more arcade like style of gameplay with an insane multiplayer component and a B movie like single player then come join us!!!
