The BBC got this wrong. The storyline is confusing, make no mistake, but watching the Special features, this was always meant to be a four part, no three part episode. The time they lost would have gone a long way to clarifying exactly what was going on.

Don't get me wrong.

I'm a Doctor Who fan. In fact, Sylvester McCoy is one of my favourite Doctor's ever, and Ace is the best companion, fullstop. But the only way you will understand exactly what happened is by watching what Andrew Cartmel says in the Bonus features section.

Still, overall, it was very good. Just don't let this be the first episode of Doctor Who you ever watch.

"Confusing But Awe-Inspiring"

Its noted by many that Doctor Who was finally getting things right when the series was cancelled in 1989. Ghost Light is considered to be the high point of Sylvester McCoys 7th Doctor and this was the first full story DVD I owned from Doctor Who and I was completely lost but that was a good thing. McCoy turns in a good performance playing down the humorous aspects of his portrayal as the Doctor.

Description

The 7th Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) brings Ace to Gabriel Chase, an old house that she once burnt down in her home town of Perivale. The year is 1883 and the house is presided over by Josiah Samuel Smith, who turns out to be the evolved form of an alien brought to Earth in a stone spaceship that is now in the basement. Others present include the explorer Redvers Fenn-Cooper, who has been driven mad by what he has seen there, and Nimrod, Smith's Neanderthal manservant. Smith intends to use Fenn-Cooper's unwitting help in a plot to kill Queen Victoria and restore the British Empire to its former glory.
