"Castle Ravenloft is a wonderfully well-designed boardgame. "
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Given the rules complexity of Dungeons and Dragons, I had expected that this boardgame-of-the-roleplaying game would also be complex. But it is not. Where the designers have been faced between a choice of a rule which works best with D&D, or a rule which works best for a boardgame they have taken the second choice every time. As a result, playing a game flies. At my first attempt – with two friends – we raced through 3 games in just over 3 hours. And that included the time it took to read the rulebook. In essence each game involves exploring a dungeon on one of 13 quests (each quite distinct). Between 1–5 players each control a character. Each character has different powers which help in facing all the dangers and monsters that the group will face in completing their quest. The dungeon is made by laying down random tiles, monsters and (mostly adverse) events occur, and the players respond. The game is fast and great fun. The board and the pieces are very high quality. The possibility for further quests and development endless. The only flaw, in my opinion, is that the rulebook is occasionally slightly opaque. Concepts are sometimes not as well explained as they could be, and I suspect any errata will not invole rule changes as they will rule clarifications.

"Great Standalone Game + Awesome for New DMs"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is a fast paced co-op game that takes an hour or less. Not really a ‘dungeon crawl’, but more of a puzzle game like Elder Sign. Plus, you can play solo. Not only is this a great game played as-is, but if you have anyone wanting to get into D&D, this is a great starter set. While the board game is based on 4e, it has plenty to offer 5e DMs – 40 miniatures, tokens, random dungeons to make your own battlemap… Highly recommended.

"A missed opportunity"
2 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

The components are first class and you get a ton of stuff in the box. This is really a good looking game. My only component gripe is that the miniatures are not painted. i really wanted to love this game, but alas it fell short for me. I found the game way too repetitive and limiting in what characters can do. It's not a bad game and a lot of people love it, but if you are seeking a game that gives you freedom to explore and adventure then this may not be for you.

Description

The master of Ravenloft is having guests for dinner – and you are invited!

Evil lurks in the towers and dungeons of Castle Ravenloft, and only heroes of exceptional bravery can survive the horrors within. Designed for 1–5 players, this board game features multiple scenarios, challenging quests, and cooperative gameplay.

Each player selects a hero; a ranger, rogue, warrior, cleric, or wizard. On their turn, each player can explore further into the dungeon (turn over new tiles), move through the already explored parts of the dungeon, and fight monsters. When a new dungeon tile is revealed, there is typically an encounter of some sort, and new monsters to fight are added. Slain monsters reward the players with treasure, and experience points, allowing them to level up and increase their skills during play. Players must cooperate to stay alive, slay the monsters, and achieve the goal of their quest. Each scenario has a different goal – from retrieving a relic to slaying a vampire lord.
