Description

'El doncel de don Enrique el Doliente' tells of a courtly intrigue from the 14th Century. It's a period portrait that keeps the reader in suspense throughout with an almost paranoid narration of a plot thick with conspirators and schemers. Enrique III, el Doliente, King of Castille from 1390 to 1406, was called "the ill" or "the suffering", due to his poor health. Amid his difficulties, he had to confront the aristocracy when it tried to take advantage of political instability stimulated by the massacre of Jews of 1391. Enrique also confronted the Trastamaras, Alfonso and Fadrique, and finally overcame them. 'El doncel de don Enrique el Doliente' has an historical background based on some of these incidents, told through a tense atmosphere and characters and protagonists pertinent to the political climate fo the times. One unique feature of the book is the profusion of characters of widely varied religious convictions. A palace adviser is Jewish, while many scenes are devoted to illustrating the conflicts that arose between the Islamic world and the Catholic monarchs of Spain.
