Description

Excerpt from Equal Suffrage: Address by Chief Justice Walter Clark of the North Carolina Supreme Court at Richmond, Va., 30, January, 1914 In every land, civilisation has been measured by the status of the women. Among barbarians they are beasts of burden. Among the semi-civilised they are secluded. And among the fanatic followers of Mohammed, embracing one-third of the people of the globe, it is held that they have no souls. Among savage tribes the club of the husband was logical. Under the common law so was the lash, because women being kept in igno rance and deprived of property rights, could be thus governed. But when they were educated and given the right to own prop erty, these things became illogical and impossible. The men of former days showed much more judgment in opposing giving education and property rights to women than do the men of this day who oppose giving them the suffrage.
