Description

Fanny is a dramatic narrative in free verse set in a mansion on an estate in the country where Fanny is the longtime cook. As Fanny rests and waits for the houseguests to return for supper she thinks about her life on the Estate and people she's known there--the dowagers, Mrs. P and Mrs. L, who have been friends and closet competitors since childhood; Cammie, Mrs. P's adult daughter who is "not right"; My George, Fanny's boyfriend, who owns the little garage and filling station out on High Road; and her friend, Gertie who was cook at Parson Baker's estate at the time of the murder/suicide.

Author Biography

James Wood, the author of Fanny and Proust's Macaroon practiced law in New York City and Los Angeles and worked at various jobs including tours at a think tank, as a section hand on the Alaska Railroad and as a roughneck in the oil fields.
