Stumbling upon this version unexpectedly, I snapped it up the moment I saw it, despite owning the original. Advent Children is a stunning movie – the plot is not as strong as the game preceding it, but it does focus on the primary characters and successfully plays on the same emotional strings. This is helped no end by a beautifully arranged score. Of course the animation is simply stunning and has not been matched 3 years after the original release, even with CG films like the recent Beowulf.
Extras-wise, the bonus disc itself has all the content of the original release, plus updates to the excellent “The Distance” making-of feature such as interviews with the English voice actors. The “Last Order” anime has also been included, which details more of the events both at Nibelheim and during the lead-up to Zack’s death. There are also two books – an English script and a novel of sorts that fleshes out some more back-story for characters that were not heavily focussed on in the film.
Add in some spiffy postcards and a very stylish collector’s box, and this is the ultimate edition of an excellent film – if you are a FF7 fan this is a must own, and even if you aren’t and just want a good action flick, for an extra $10 this is still the best version to get!
