Based on over twenty years' experience, Fundamentals of Shield Tunnelling--Design and Construction provides comprehensive and current guidance on key aspects of the design and construction of shield tunnels from the basic concepts to detailed technical requirements. It contains numerous case studies examining projects completed over the past decade, including the large diameter Shanghai Yangtze river tunnel and Qianjiang river tunnel, together with smaller diameter projects such as underground railways and maglev tunnels. Although shield tunnelling has been addressed in numerous articles, only a few books consider modern case histories in detail. Author Biography

Dr Zixin Zhang is a Professor of Underground Structures/Geotechnical Engineering at Tongji University. He has over 20 years of experience in tunnels, geotechnical engineering, and application of analytical and numerical methods to tunnels and geotechnical engineering. He is a research paper reviewer for 12 technical Journals and has written 5 books on underground structures and stability of discontinuous rock masses. He currently holds the position of Professor of Tunnel and Underground Structures and vice-head of the Institute of Tunnel and Underground Engineering at Tongji University in Shanghai, China. Dr. Kieffer is a Professional Civil Engineer, Certified Engineering Geologist, and Registered Geologist with over 20 years of consulting and applied academic experience. He currently holds the position of Professor of Engineering Geology and Head of the Institute of Applied Geosciences at the Graz University of Technology in Austria.
