Author Biography:

Serif Mardin recently retired from the School of International Service at The American University. He has been a fellow at St. Anthony's College at Oxford as well as a visiting professor at Columbia, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), Princeton University, the University of California at Berkeley, and UCLA. He is the author of Religion and Social Change in Modern Turkey and the editor of Cultural Transition in the Middle East.
