William Gladstone's involvement in the major political events of the 19th century, from parliamentary reform in the 1830s to Irish home rule in the 1880s, is the main theme of this biography of the Victorian Liberal politician. The private life of this influential figure is also explored, as well as his activities as a scholar and theologian. This edition of the book has been revised to include parts of Gladstone's diary published since 1974 and a bibliography of recent publications on his life.
