"Some fluff but a lot of brilliance"
4 stars"

Nobody watches a Godzilla movie for the human characters. Which is a pity, because this film spends an inordinate amount of time with them, and though there are no actually bad performances, it fails to make its primary protagonist more compelling than the supporting characters, especially Brian Cranston. On the plus side, the tone of the movie is brilliant and the action scenes are breathtaking to behold, especially when you finally get to see the Big Guy himself. Watch out for a particular scene that makes a parachute drop into one of the eeriest I've seen in a long while.

Description

Godzilla

Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a Navy bomb expert, has just reunited with his family in San Francisco when he is forced to go to Japan to help his estranged father, Joe (Bryan Cranston). Soon, both men are swept up in an escalating crisis when Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries that threaten the survival of humanity. The creatures leave colossal destruction in their wake, as they make their way toward their final battleground: San Francisco.

Critic Reviews:

  • " Every time Edwards' Godzilla rears up, you stiffen with excitement. Every time he roars, Edwards wants you to feel it and wince. " – David Sims
  • " ‘Godzilla’ doesn't feel cynical; there's a sense of joy to the picture, of honest-to-God fun, which separates it from many of its summer movie brethren. " – Jason Bailey
  • " This isn't a thinking man's Godzilla, exactly, but it's certainly clever where it counts. " – Richard Lawson
