Description

Golf, authored by William Garrot Brown, captures the early years of a nascent sport in the United States. The book is somewhere between a history and a commentary, combining factual information about the sport's origins with the author's opinions on the matter. In his introduction, Brown refers to golf, alongside money and a sense of empire, as having "affected very notably the daily walk and conversation of such Americans as one ordinarily has in mind when one says 'we' or 'us'." Brown correctly predicts golf's increasing social importance, particularly amongst the affluent circles of society. The book traces the growing popularity of the sport in America, beginning first with the game in Europe and eventually arriving at the reasons behind golf's increasing popularity in the United States. At less than seventy pages, Golf is a light read and one that most readers will get through in a single sitting. It is an entertaining analysis of the game and its social status in the United States. Brown views golf as a game for the upper class, an opinion which has largely been supported in the more than one hundred years since the writing of this book. Brown also correctly predicted the sport's rise in popularity, from a game played mostly by adults to one that now appeals to people of all ages. Golf is a light read and one that will certainly appeal to anybody interested in the sport. Brown is seemingly prophetic in some of his analysis, and is consistently entertaining throughout. Those interested in books about sport history will surely find this to be a worthwhile read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
