Description

Recognized today as the undisputed master of the American Gothic horror story. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) poured his genius for the bizarre into these nine tales of terror - among them "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," a gripping tale considered the first true detective story; "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Masque of the Red Death," teeming with eerie thoughts, impulses, and fears; "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Cask of Amontillado," two tales of wickedness and foul play, and "The Pit and the Pendulum," with its agonizing specter of imminent and horrifying death. Reprinted here in large-print format, these classics will delight mystery lovers and horror story fans.Begun in 1904 when Joyce was 22. the 15 short stories comprising Dubliners were completed by the end of 1907, but remained unpublished until 1913 - victims of Edwardian squeamishness. Their vivid, tightly focused observations of the lives of Dublin's poorer classes, unconventional themes, coarse language, and mention of actual people and places, made publishers of the day reluctant to undertake sponsorship. The stories have since won a place among the most read and studied in English literature; and at least one of them, "The Dead," is considered a masterpiece.
