Description

Tony Hawk, the author of Hawk, Occupation: Skateboarder, took booksellers by surprise with his best-selling adult autobiography. Now, the most recognizable “extreme” athlete in the world has written an autobiography meant to inspire a younger legion of fans.

In this young adult autobiography, he shares the events that have helped him become a skateboarding legend, including details about his life growing up and how the decisions he made helped influence his career. Tony tells of his life as a gifted, hyper, super-competitive “demon” child who found peace while on a skateboard. He had his parents’ undying support. Not only did his dad drive him miles to the nearest skatepark for practice, but he also founded the National Skateboarding Association, which helped organize the sport and competitions and boost skating’s popularity in the ’80s. Tony was teased by classmates because of his interest in an “uncool” sport.

His competitors made fun of his skating style and teased him about his age—he was a few years younger than most of the skaters he competed against. Because of his love for the sport he was able to withstand being mocked. Instead of looking to violence or finding comfort in drugs, he practiced even more. When skateboarding did finally make a comeback, he was in great form and made it to the top. In this book, he inspires a younger generation to stand up for what they believe in and follow their dreams. In a time when more and more children are turning to violence to solve schoolyard problems, Tony’s story will help them see that sometimes the “losers” can finish first. Two generations of skateboarders look up to Tony Hawk.

He has made millions, broken records, invented new tricks, and single handedly taken skateboarding farther than anyone thought it could go. His story is a touching tale of perseverance and determination, which is sure to inspire children. Despite the ups and downs in his career, his dedication has made him a hero to many generations.
