Description

Heart-made emphasizes that design should be driven by heart, by conscience. It reflects the moral of Chinese architects who are in the developing course of sustainable architectural design. Fang Zhenning A beautiful design comes from the heart and the heart is the motor of the ethic. It is the architect who interprets the range of this ethic. Fang Zhenning Chinese architecture and urban development flourish as never before. At top speed new buildings rise in the skyline of the great metropolises and new towns and entire new urban districts arise. The speed at which this happens and the extent of these developments have never been seen before in the history of architecture and urban development. The world looks on in amazement. Because at the same time as this massive architectural production a new generation of architects has arisen in China in the last decennium. This avant-garde breaks radically away from the grey and functional architecture of the Peoples Repulic. They are inspired by great western masters such as Rem Koolhaas and en Steven Holl, but also add their own accents, often with references to the centuries-old Chinese culture. New concepts of permanency are central to this. Heart-made not only offers a wide selection of remarkable recent projects, but also gives a good picture of the experimental practices of architecture in the margin: digital architecture which offers a glance at the cities of the future, video, installation art and the art of sound. In this way the book covers a wide spectrum of the young avant-garde Chinese architects who are giving shape to a society in wholesale change. Fang Zhenning is a well-known Chinese architecture and art critic and independent curator. He regularly reviews art and architecture using a wide range of influences. As a consultant in China Central Television (CCTV) and senior writer of ABITARE, he has written millions of words in critical essays. Fang is also a blogger who has gained a tremendous number of readers with his incisive views. Finally, he is the director of Fang Media Studio and a visiting professor in his graduate school, China Centre Academy of Fine Art. Fang lives in Beijing. Christophe Pourtois has been director of the Centre International pour la Ville, l'Architecture et le Paysage (CIVA) since it was created in 1999. He is an official of the Court of Audit of Belgium. He graduated in Law and Tax Law at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles and in History of Art and Architecture at the Universite Lille 3 - Charles de Gaulle. In addition to his role as director, he has organised exhibitions at the CIVA and elsewhere, including the V&A in London and the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Cherbourg. He is an author, who has contributed to several publications on different subjects connected with contemporary architecture, and is a doctoral student of the Universite Libre de Bruxelles. Marcelle Rabinowicz is an architect and independent curator. She has been working with the CIVA since its creation 10 years ago. She is responsible for its exhibitions, including their coordination and production. She has also produced several publications for the CIVA including catalogues, architectural guides and monographs. The exhibitions Marcelle has organised have taken place in Brussels and other venues in Belgium as well in various other countries.
