Excellent CD and DVD combo to introduce Science concepts to children of every age. We listened to the CD many times in the car before watching the DVD and this helped a lot with getting to know the songs. The songs are fun and catchy in a variety of styles, and are tolerable to the ears of all family members despite differing tastes in music – so perfect for family trips.
The DVD simply contains the songs set to lovely animations using mixed media that illustrate the song along with quirky introductions by TMBG.
The song titles are mainly self explanatory. “Roy G Biv” is about the colour spectrum and “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” is a remake of the song with a space theme. “Why Does the Sun Really Shine?” clears up the inaccuracies in “Why Does the Sun Shine?” and demonstrates the scientific method at work. The different styles of song also mean that we get to hear a Round with “What is a Shooting Star?” and that would have to be my favourite song followed closely by “I am a Paleontologist”. My daughter's favourite is “Electric Car” and the DVD has the most gorgeous animated video to go with it – guaranteed to put a smile on the face of anyone who watches it.
Something to be aware of is the speed of the lyrics can be a bit too fast for young children to hear clearly (making for amusing misheard lyrics when they sing on their own) and some concepts will be more suitable for slightly older children though they aren't wasted on younger ones.
Overall, I haven't experienced one moment of regret at buying this album and my only wish is that They Might Be Giants would release another science album so we'd have even more songs to use as jumping off points for science!
