Since the publication of "Hitler: A Study in Tyranny" in 1952, our knowledge of Hitler's life and, more importantly, of the historical context of his life, has been greatly extended by the opening up of the archival sources of Weimar and Nazi Germany. This book aims to provide a new synthesis and interpretation of our understanding of Hitler, set firmly within the history of his times, both shaping and being shaped by events.

Ian Kershaw is Professor of Modern History at the University of Sheffield and one of the world's leading authorities on Hitler.
