Hornby: DB Schenker Mk3 DVT
Evolving from the ‘Pull-Push’ carriage stock, a Driving Van Trailer (DVT) enables the driver to operate a train at the opposite end from the actual locomotive, negating the need for the locomotive to ‘run round’ at termini. In appearance, the modern DVT resembles a locomotive but it is unpowered, acting purely as a control car and is governed by the same operating rules as the locomotive. Control signals from the DVT are relayed to the locomotive via specially screened cabling, initial use of the RCH jumpers to carry the signals having proved unreliable.
The Mark 3 DVTs were introduced by Intercity in 1989/1990 for use on daytime West Coast main line trains from London Euston and their use has continued and evolved. 82146 is a Mk.3 DVT operated by DB Schenker as part of their DB Schenker Company Train and is painted in the same silver colour scheme as the Class 67 67029 and three Mk.3 coaches.
